PawSox Get Late Run to Edge Red Wings 4-3
The Pawtucket Red Sox once again rallied for the go ahead run in the bottom of the eighth, this time to come away with a 4-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings last night at McCoy.
With the score knotted at 3-3 entering the bottom of the eighth Lars Anderson led off the inning by earning a walk off Red Wings’ reliever Chuck James (3-2). Hector Luna singled to right advancing Anderson to second. Luis Exposito grounded into a double play, moving Anderson to third. Will Middlebrooks then drove in the winning run with a single to left.
Rochester starter Deinys Suarez’ inability to command the strike zone led to two Pawtucket runs in the bottom of the third. With one out Suarez walked Jose Iglesias and Joey Gathright. With Drew Sutton at the plate Suarez threw a wild pitch advancing the runners. After Sutton was retired on strikes, Daniel Nava drove in both runners with a line single to right.
Nava drove in his third run of the game with a RBI double to right in the fifth. Nava finished the day 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBI.
Alex Wilson got the start for the PawSox but did not figure in the decision. He worked six innings, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out six but did not walk a batter. Wilson gave up one home runs, a two run shot to former PawSox’ Aaron Bates in the fourth.
Hidecki Okajima (8-1) earned the win in relief. Randy Williams came on in the ninth to pick-up his eighth save of the year.
The two clubs will wrap up the regular season this afternoon at 1:05p.m. Eric Hacker (7-13, 5.85 ERA) takes the mound for Rochester. Greg Smith (4-4, 4.64 ERA) will throw for the PawSox.
NOTES: With the win the PawSox won their 80th game of the season. This is only the seventh time in franchise history the PawSox have reached that plateau, with the last being in 2008 when Pawtucket won a franchise-best 85 games.
PawSox C Ryan Lavarnway is expected to be called up by the Red Sox today as they embark on a trip to Tornoto beginning this afternoon. In a related move the PawSox placed Tony Pena, Jr on the temporarily inactive list and called up C Dan Butler from Portland.
