Lackey Sharp, PawSox Edge Tides in 11 5-4

PAWTUCKET-  Red Sox pitcher John Lackey made an impressive rehab start for the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight at McCoy and the PawSox scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to come away with a 5-4 win over the Norfolk Tides.

Lackey had command of all his pitches during his outing.  His one mistake was giving up a solo home run to Tides’ CF Matt Angle in the top of the third..  Lackey finished 5 2/3 innings, giving up one run on three hits.  He struck our four and did not walk a batter.  He threw 63 pitches, 46 for strikes.  He was slated to throw a maximum of 70 pitches.

Lackey is expected to return to Boston to start this Sunday against Oakland at Fenway.

The PawSox entered the bottom of the 11th down by a run after The Tides got to PawSox pitcher Brandon Duckworth on a lead-off double to center by CF Matt Angle and a RBI single by 1B Brandon Snyder.

Pawtucket led off the bottom of the inning by tying the game on a solo homer by Daniel Nava, his first of 2011 off Tides pitcher Mark Worrell.  Brent Dlugach then singled and advanced to second as Tides 2B Nick Green could not come up with a grounder by Luis Exposito.  Jose Iglesias advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Worrell (0-3) then intentionally walked Nate Spears to load the bases.  After Che Hsuan Lin flew out to left, Tony Thomas drove in the winning run with a bloop single to left.

The PawSox scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth off Tides starter Mike Ballard on a two-run homer by Luis Exposito. They added another in the fifth on a lead-off single by Lin, a double by Thomas, and a ground out by Darnell McDonald.

The Tides tied the game as soon as Duckworth relieved Lackey in the seventh.  Snyder hit a single and was driven in on a two-run homer by 3B Josh Bell.

Hideki Okajima (1-0) came on in relief of Duckworth in the 11th and earned his first win of 2011.

Snyder had three hits to pace the Tides offense.  Thomas had three for the PawSox.

Game three of the series will be tomorrow night at 6:05p.m.  Kevin Millwood is slated to make his 2011 debut for the PawSox.
