Five Run Tenth Carries PawSox Past Bisons

The Pawtucket Red Sox broke-up a 3-3 tie with five runs in the top of the tenth, leading to a 8-3 win last night over the Buffalo Bisons at Coca-Cola Field.  With the win the PawSox won four game sin the six game series in Buffalo.

With one out in the tenth Buffalo pitcher Sean Green issued consecutive walks to Lars Anderson and Jack Hannahan.  After a Dusty Brown strikeout Jorge Jimenez broke up the tie with a RBI single to center.  Niuman Romero then loaded the bases with a single.  Green was then replaced on the mound by Adam Pettyjohn.  Josh Reddick then greeted Pettyjohn by clearing the bases with a grand slam to right.

Reddick continued his hot hand at the plate, going 2 for 6 with four RBI’s.  Hannahan also had two hits and drove in two.

The PawSox opened up a 3-0 lead for starter Rich Hill before the Bisons began chipping away.  Hill gave up one run in five innings of work.  He walked two and struck out five.

Hideki Okajima was once again shaky in another rehab appearance with Pawtucket, giving up a run in one inning on the mound.

The Bisons tied the game in the bottom of the eighth on a solo homer by DH Valentino Pascucci off Pawtucket reliever Tommy Hottovy.

The PawSox road trip continues as the team heads east to begin a four game series with the Rochester Red Wings tonight at 7:05p.m. Fabio Castro (5-9, 5.11 ERA) gets the start for Pawtucket. Mike Bromberg (1-2, 3.32 ERA) takes the hill for Rochester.

  • PawSox Corral Bisons 7-3

    The Pawtucket Red Sox got off to a hot start and then was able to hold on, beating the Buffalo Bisons last night 7-3 at Coca-Cola Field.

    Pawtucket got of the board with three runs in the fourth on four consecutive hits by Josh Reddick, Jeremy Hermida, Bubba Bell and Aaron Bates.

    The PawSox tacked on another in the fifth on Reddick’s 14th homer of the season.

    Pawtucket was cruising behind the pitching of Adam Mills (3-9).  Mills threw six shutout innings, giving up five hits while striking out five and not walking a batter.

    Buffalo made the game interesting by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth off PawSox reliever Chad Paronto.  1B Nick Evans and CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis had RBI doubles to cut the Pawtucket lead to 4-3.

    The PawSox added insurance in the top of the ninth, scoring three times on RBI singles by Mark Wagner, Niuman Romero, and Reddick.

    Reddick continues on his torrid late season pace, going 5 for 5 with two RBI’s.

    The fianle of the series with Buffalo takes place tonight at 7:05p.m. Rich Hill (2-0, 3.82 ERA) goes for Pawtucket.  Raul Valdes (1-1, 2.11 ERA) throws for the Bisons..

    NOTES:  The Red Sox have announced that RP Hideki Okajimi will remain with the PawSoxfor at least one more appearance as part of his rehab assignment. Okajima gave up four runs on four hits in his second outing with the club Monday night.

    The Red Sox have also activated C Kevin Cash from the 15 day disabled list.  To make room on the roster the Red Sox have optioned Dusty Brown back to Pawtucket.

  • Bisons Take Advantage of PawSox Pitching, Sloppy Play

    The Buffalo Bisons took advantage of some sloppy defense early and an ineffective bullpen late, coming away with a 12-4 win last night over the Pawtucket Red Sox at Coca-Cola Field.

    PawSox starter Kris Johnson (4-13) was saddled with the loss.  He gave up four runs in four innings, although only one was earned due to sloppy play on the field.  Two doubles, a throwing error, and wild pitch led to two Buffalo runs in the bottom of the first.  A single, double, and passed ball led to two more for the Bisons in the fourth.

    Johnson finished his outing giving up six hits, walking two and striking out four.

    Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Pawtucket bullpen imploded, giving up four runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.  T.J. Large gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits in two innings of work.  One of those hits was a solo home run by Buffalo RF Russ Adams.

    Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima, with the PawSox as part of a rehab assignment, gave up four runs while only retiring one batter in the seventh.  Okajima gave up four singles and a two-run homer to Adams before recording an out.  Santo Luis came in to relieve Okajima and allowed two inherited runners to score.

    On the offensive side of the ball Josh Reddick and Jeremy Hermida led the charge for Pawtucket.  Reddick went 3 for 4 with two homers and two runs batted in.  Hermida also had three hits and drove in a run.  Gustavo Molina added a solo homer for the PawSox.

    Adams drove in four runs to pace the Bisons.

    Game five of this six game series is tonight at 7:05p.m.  Adam Mills (2-9, 5.31 ERA) takes the mound for Pawtucket.  He’ll be opposed by Michael Antonini (1-1, 4.50 ERA) for the Bisons.

  • PawSox Sweep Bisons

    The Pawtucket Red Sox put together clutch hitting with solid pitching to sweep a double header from the Buffalo Bisons 9-2 and 7-5 this afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.

    Seven of the nine runs in game one came from three PawSox hitters.  Lars Anderson had two hits, including a homer, and three RBI’s.  Jeremy Hermida knocked in two with a homer, and Gustavo Molina also homered and drove in a pair.

    Bubba Bell and Aaron Bates drove in the other two runs for Pawtucket.

    Ramon Ramirez (4-4) pitched a complete game (seven innings) to get the win.  He gave up two runs on seven hits.  The runs came on a two run homer in the seventh by Bisons C J.R. House.  Ramirez walked one and struck out two.

    In game two the PawSox scored two runs with two out in the top of the seventh to break up a 5-5 tie.  Niuman Romero walked off Buffalo reliever Chad Cordero.  Bell singled Romero to second.  Bates drove in Romero with a single to center.  Anderson added the insurance run with an RBI single on a ball hit back to Cordero.

    Robert Coello started game two but did not figure in the decision.  He worked four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on two hits.  He walked three and struck out three.  Robert Manuel (7-2) got the win, even though he gave up two runs on three hits over two innings.  Fernando Cabrera picked-up his 16th save.

    Bates had a big game for the PawSox, going 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI’s.  Anderson added two hits and drove in two.

    The teams continue their series tomorrow night at 7:05p.m.  Kris Johnson (4-12, 5.43 ERA) will be opposed Dillon Gee (12-7, 4.84 ERA) for Buffalo.

  • Bisons Take Opener, Rain Wins Nightcap

    The Pawtucket Red Sox and Buffalo Bisons were scheduled to play a double header last night at Coco-Cola Field.  But the weather got in the way.  Buffalo opened up an early lead and held on to win game one 5-4.  Rain forced the postponement of game two.  The teams will attempt to play a double header this afternoon beginning at 1:05p.m.

    Buffalo scored all its runs in the first two innings off PawSox starter Fabio Castro (5-9).  1B Nick Evans blasted a two run homer off Castro in the first.  RBI singles by SS Luis Hernandez, C Michael Barrett, and CF Jesus Feliciano capped the Buffalo scoring in the second.

    The PawSox climbed back into the ball game with three runs in the third on a two run double by Bubba Bell and a RBI single by Lars Anderson.  They tacked on another in the fourth when Gil Velazquez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

    Red Sox reliever Hideki Okajima made a rehab appearance for the PawSox last night without incident.  On the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, Okajima pitched one inning, giving up only one hit and no runs.  He is slated to pitch again Monday.

    Castro worked a total of five innings, giving up a total of ten hits. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter.

    Anderson had three of Pawtucket’s 11 hits on the night.  Buffalo 3B also had three hits for the Bisons.

    NOTES:  The PawSox placed 1B/DH Carlos Delgado on the 7-day disabled list with soreness in his left hip.
