PawSox Fall in Finale, 9-4

The Pawtucket Red Sox struggled on the mound and at the plate, falling to the Syracuse Chiefs last night 9-4 at Alliance bank Stadium.  With the win the Chiefs took three of four games in the series.

PawSox starter Robert Coello labored in his second start for the PawSox.  He gave up six runs (three earned) on five hits in 3 2/3 innings on the mound.  He walked three and struck out three.  Coello (1-1) also surrendered a two run homer to DH Jason Botts in the third inning.

Chad Paronto (one run) and Robert Manuel (two runs) did not fare any better on the mound in relief of Coello.

Botts was the offensive star of the night for the Chiefs, going 2 for 3 with 5 RBI’s.

The PawSox offense was primarily led by Aaron Bates, who went 2 for 4 with a 3-run homer.  Lars Anderson also added two hits.  Nuiman Romero had a double and a RBI.

The PawSox head back home to McCoy tonight (7:05 p.m.) to open up a four game series with the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees.  Tim Redding (2-3, 3.89 ERA) He’ll face Adam Mills (1-6, 4.25 ERA) for the PawSox.

NOTES:  The Red Sox announced yesterday that they have activated IF Eric Patterson and have sent RP Fabio Castro back to the PawSox.  Patterson was acquired from the A’s Sunday for minor league pitcher Fabian Williamson.

It is possible that PawSox catcher Gustavo Molina may be promoted to Boston with the injury over the weekend to Victor Martinez.  The Sox have not decided whether Martinez will be placed on the disabled list with a broken left thumb

  • Bowden, PawSox Silence Chiefs

    The Pawtucket Red Sox received some timely hitting and strong starting pitching in beating the Syracuse Chiefs 8-1 yesterday at Alliance Bank Stadium.

    Most of the offense was supplied by Ryan Shealy and Josh Reddick.  Shealy had a two run double and two run homer.  Reddick, back with the club after a brief stint with Boston,  added a three run bomb.

    Pawtucket received another solid start from Michael Bowden (3-3).  Bowden gave up one run on four hits in six innings of work.  He walked three and struck out four in getting the win.

    Tommy Hottovy pitched two scoreless innings giving up only two hits while Fernando Cabrera chipped in with two strikeouts shutting down the Chiefs in order in the ninth.

    The two clubs wrap-up their series tonight at 7:00 p.m.  Ramon Ramirez (1-2, 5.48 ERA) throws for the PawSox.   Shairon Martis (4-5, 4.00 ERA) starts for the Chiefs.

    NOTES:  IF Angel Sanchez was called up by the Red Sox to take the spot of the ailing Dustin Pedroia.  Josh Reddick was activated by the PawSox yesterday and Ryan Kalish returned to the team from the disabled list.  OF Alex Hassan was transferred to Single-A Salem.

  • Chiefs Handle PawSox 6-1

    The Syracuse Chiefs had little trouble taking care of business last night, coming away with a 6-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox at Alliance Bank Stadium.

    PawSox starter Felix Doubront (2-2) did not pitch poorly, but was saddled with the loss. He worked five innings, giving up three runs on only two hits. He walked two and struck out four.

    Kason Gabbard made his return to the PawSox last night in relief of Doubront and gave up a solo home run to the Chiefs’ Case Lambin in the sixth.

    T.J Large gave up two runs on two hits while walking three in a shaky seventh inning.

    The PawSox offense scattered five hits, with Bubba Bell collecting two of them and driving in Pawtucket’s lone run in the fifth. Bell has been the PawSox’ most consistent hitter over the last week.

    Game two of the series is tonight at 7:00 p.m. Kris Johnson (3-5, 4.68 ERA) takes the hill for the PawSox. He faces Jeff Mandel (2-3, 5.58 ERA) for the Chiefs.

    NOTES: The Pawtucket to Boston shuttle continues to roll. Lefty reliever Fabio Castro was called up to the Red Sox to add some much needed bullpen depth. Josh Reddick was optioned back to Pawtucket.

  • Yankees Earn Split with PawSox

    The Scranton-Wilkes Bare Yankees scored three runs in the first two innings, setting the stage for a 5-1 win over the Pawtucket Red Sox last night in Moosic, PA.  The win earned the Yankees a split of their four game series with the PawSox.

    Adam Mills (1-6) got the start for the PawSox and took the loss.  He pitched 6 1/3 innings giving up all five runs on nine hits.  He walked two, struck out two, and gave up a two run homer to Yankee 2B Reggie Corona.

    The PawSox could not gain any offensive momentum against Yankees starter Tim Redding (2-3).  Redding gave up only the one run on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings, that being a sacrifice fly to PawSox newcomer Alex Hassan in the third.  Redding walked one and struck out two.

    Only three PawSox players accounted for all the hits the team collected last night, all of which were singles.  Gil Velazquez had three while Lars Anderson and Bubba Bell chipped in with two each.

    The PawSox road trip continues tonight (7:00 p.m.) with the first of four games in Syracuse against the Chiefs.   Felix Doubront (2-1, 1.08 ERA) makes his return for the PawSox.  He’ll be opposed by Jeff Mandel (2-3, 5.58 ERA) for the Chiefs.

  • PawSox Make It Two Straight Over the Yankees

    Nuiman Romero’s RBI single in the top of the seventh broke a 6-6 tie, giving the PawSox a 7-6 win over the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees last night.  The PawSox have now won two straight in Moosic, PA.

    Lars Anderson, who had been struggling at the plate, was the batting hero for Pawtucket, going 3 for 4 with a homer and two RBI’s.  Gustavo Molina added a two run homer. Jorge Jimenez also had three hits and a RBI.

    Ramor Ramirez started for the PawSox and was hampered by poor Pawtucket defense.  In five innings Ramirez gave up six runs, only three of which were earned.  He walked one and struck out four.  He did give up a two-run homer to Yankees C Rene Rivera in the second.  Rivera drove in three runs on the night.

    T.J. Large (3-0) picked-up the win in relief.  Fernando Cabrera notched his 10th save of the season.

    The teams play the finale of the four game set tonight (7:05 p.m.) Adam Mills (1-5, 4.01 ERA) goes for the PawSox. Tim Redding (1-3, 4.50 ERA) starts for the Yankees.

    NOTES:  The PawSox have now lost both of their catchers to the disabled list after Dusty Brown was shut down yesterday with a strained left thumb. According the the PawSox’ Dan Hoard, X-Rays on the thumb were negative, but Brown is headed back to Boston for a MRI.  Mark Wagner has been sidelined wince April with a broken hand.  Juan Apodoca has been promoted from Portland to give Pawtucket a second catcher.
