  • Indians make It Three Straight Over PawSox

PAWTUCKET-  One day after scoring nine runs in a loss, the Pawtucket Red Sox tonight met the same fate but with much less of an offensive effort, falling to the Indianapolis Indians 4-1.  Indy has won the first three games of the series and have upped their overall winning streak to six.

The PawSox’ lone run came on a solo home run by Josh Reddick in the bottom of the sixth.  It was Reddick’s second homer of the season.

“I think certain guys are hitting to the pull side, not thinking baseball and giving what the pitchers give them.” said PawSox Manager Torey Lovullo, “This is an advanced level where a lot of young hitters go for the jackpot when they have to set up the pitcher.  I don’t think our young hitters are doing that right now.”

Pawtucket was held in check by Indy starter Daniel McCutchen (1-0) who made his first start for the Indians after being sent down from Pittsburgh where he was ineffective as the Bucs’ fifth starter.  McCutchen threw seven innings, giving up one run on five hits.  He walked two and struck out three and gave up Reddick’s homer.

The Indians’ offense wasted little time in getting in gear by scoring a run in the top of the first off PawSox starter Randor Bierd.  Lead-off man Jose Tabata singled to center and advanced to second on a wild return throw by Bubba Bell.  After a fly out to right by Neil Walker, Brian Myrow drove in Tabata with a double to right.

The Indians scored another run in the second on a triple by C Luke Carlin and a sacrifice fly by SS Brian Friday.  Indy got two more runs in the fourth on a walk and three singles.

Bierd (2-2) took the loss, working five innings, giving up four runs (3 earrned) on seven hits.  He walked two and struck out two.  He threw 87 pitches, 49 for strikes.

Robert Manuel remained perfect on the season, extending his scoreless streak to 14 innings after his two innings on the mound tonight.  He was saved in the top of the seventh on a spectacular diving catch in right center by Bubba Bell who fired the ball back to the infield to double off Neil Walker.

Scott Atchison made his first appearance for the PawSox since being optioned to Pawtucket earlier this week.  He worked the last two innings in scoreless fashion, which included getting out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth.

The pre-game buzz surrounded the promotion of Lars Anderson from Portland.  Anderson joined the team after the first pitch and did get into the game in the sixth when he pinch hit for Mark Wagner  who left the game with a hand injury.  Anderson grounded to McCutchen in his PawSox debut.

“I was hitting in the cage and was told I might pinch hit.  I didn’t know it would be that quick.”  said Anderson,  “I was happy to get that opportunity.”

Tabata and C Luke Carlin had two hits each to lead the Indians offense.  Reddick and Angel Sanchez had two hits for the PawSox.

The PawSox and Indians wrap-up their four game series tomorrow night (6:15pm).  Brad Lincoln (2-1, 3.63 ERA) throws for the Indians.  Adam Mills (0-2, 4.26 ERA) goes for Pawtucket.

NOTES: Lovullo says he expects to ease Anderson into the line-up.

“We don’t want to put him into an environmemt where he’s trying to do too much.” said Lovullo

More than likely Anderson will bat sixth or seventh in the early going with the expectation he will move to the middle of the line-up as the season progresses.  Anderson will play first base and Aaron Bates will move to the outfield and serve as the DH from time to time.
