PawSox Drop Thier Seventh Straight, 7-3
PAWTUCKET- When a team is in a prolonged losing streak, sometimes there are no words to describe it. That appears to be the case with the current skid facing the Pawtucket Red Sox.
The PawSox have now lost seven straight games and 10 of their last 11 after falling to the Indianapolis Indians tonight 7-3 before 6,142 fans at McCoy.
For the PawSox this game featured a second straight letdown by what has been a fairly consistent pitching staff. Pawtucket hurlers gave up a total of 12 walks and hit six Indianapolis batters.
PawSox starter Charlie Zink (4-10) had another shaky outing. He worked only 4 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on four hits. More staggering was his lack of control as he walked a season-high seven batters and hit four others. He now has hit a PawSox record 20 batters this season. Zink threw 98 pitches, only 44 of which were strikes.
Jose Vaquedano did not fare much better, throwing 2/3 of an inning giving up two runs on two hits. He also walked two and struk out no one.
Rocky Cherry gave up a run on three hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. He also walked three and struck out two.
Indianapolis starter Tom Gorzelanny (2-0) worked six full innings to pick up the win. He gave up the lone PawSox run, a solo homer by 2B Travis Denker in the bottom of the fourth. Gorzelanny surrendered four hits while walking three and striking out six.
Pawtucket’s other runs came in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Aaron Bates and an RBI single by Carlos Maldonado.
LF Lastings Milledge led the Indians offensive attack going 3-4 with a walk, HBP, and 2 RBI’s. DH Larry Broadway added two hits including a double and a RBI.
Denker and LF Bubba Bell had two hits apiece for Pawtucket.
Game three of the series will be tomorrow night (6:05 PM). RHP Brad Lincoln (1-1, 4.70 ERA) will start for the Indians while Enrique Gonzalez (7-8, 5.57 ERA) throws for the PawSox.
