Indians Bash PawSox 14-7

The PawSox offense finally scored some runs on Friday night, but the pitching staff was not up to the task in keeping its opponent’s bats in check.  Pawtucket fell to the Indianapolis Indians, 14-7 last night at Victory Field.

PawSox starter Enrique Gonzalez (5-4) struggled, giving up 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits in 4 1/3 innings pitched.  He walked one, struck out four, and gave up one home run.  Reliever Randor Baird did not fare any better, giving up 5 runs (only one earned) on 5 hits in 2/3 of an inning of work.  Jose Vaquedano was the pitching star of the night for Pawtucket, giving up only one unearned run on two hits over the last three innings of the game.

Pawtucket scored five times in the top of the third on an RBI double by Mark Kotsay, an RBI single by Carlos Maldonado, and a three-run homer by Paul McAnulty. They added a pair of runs in the ninth on a Chip Ambres RBI triple and a Maldonado sacrifice fly.

Both clubs combined for 27 hits.  Ambres, Maldonado, and Freddie Guzman had two hits apiece for the PawSox.  Garrett Jones (2 doubles, 1 RBI) and Steve Pearce (1 double, 1 RBI) each collected 4 hits for the Indians.  Neil Walker homered and drove in 4 runs while Brian Bixler doubled and drove in 3.

Indianapolis starter Daniel McCutchen (3-3) gave up five runs but was still able to pick up the win.

Game two of the four game series with the Indians is tonight (7:00pm).  Clay Buchholz (3-0, 1.30 ERA) will go for Pawtucket. Virgil Vazquez (4-2, 4.04 ERA) takes the hill for Indy.
