Projected PawSox 2009- Jonathan Van Every

vaneveryjonThe 2008 Pawtucket Red Sox did not lack power from their outfield positions…and it’s very likely 2009 will be no different.  Among those who put up impressive numbers last year was Jonathan Van Every.

Signed as a free agent in December 2007 after spending seven seasons in the Cleveland Indians’ organization, Van Every batted .263 with 26 homers and 70 RBI’s for the PawSox.  His 26 homers led the team.

His fast start in 2008 earned him a promotion to Boston in May to spot the ailing J.D. Drew.  In 11 games with the Red Sox Van Every batted .235 with a triple and 5 RBI’s.

Other than his obvious power potential, Van Every also brings above average speed to the PawSox.  He can be a bit impatient at the plate, striking out a career-high 157 times in 2008.

The 29 year-old Van Every spent all of 2008 patrolling McCoy’s centerfield, although he has also seen time in left.   Scouts tab him with a great glove and an above average arm in the outfield.

Even though Van Every is on Boston’s 40-man roster, do not expect him to make the team when camp breaks.  If he is able to repeat his 2008 performance, Van Every may be called upon again to spell injuries in the Boston outfield.
